Wednesday 19th Feb Update 11 April 2018 The first $10,000 raised has been allocated to Professor David Thomas for The Molecular Screening and Therapeutics (MoST) Programs at the Garvan Institute for Medical Research. MoST uses genomic screening to identify variants that could become the basis for treatments, and identifies whether effective therapies for more common cancer may work in rare cancers. This program gives hope to many rare cancer patients who otherwise would have no other treatment option. This page is in loving memory of Laurence Edward Vorel, who, at 19 years of age so humbly and courageously contended with a rare and highly aggressive form of childhood bone cancer called Osteosarcoma, for three and a half years. Laurence suffered so greatly with terrible pain during his illness yet he would rarely complain. He was an extraordinary young man with a passion and zest for life. Even during the debilitating illness, Laurence continued his love for creating and playing his own music, speaking Mandarin and riding his motorbike. He was extraordinarily brave, loving and giving. Laurence was always concerned about the welfare of those around him - family, friends, strangers - often more so than of himself. He was such a beautiful, gregarious and clever young man, so tragically taken from us in his prime. On behalf of our dearest Laurence and in memory of Laurence's generous and courageous spirit, a donation would be very much appreciated to help bring treatments to current and future Sick or Treat patients.
