Keith Barnard

By Paul Woodward

In loving memory of Keith Barnard

My Dad fought the good fight. Despite his diagnosis with mesothelioma in March 2018, he had an amazing 2+ years packed with more experiences that many achieve in a lifetime. He was lucky enough to respond to experimental therapy that really helped, and gave him a quality of life so that he could pursue his passions. Travel. 4WD'ing (showing those younguns how it should be done), building racing buggies, solving mechanical problems that confounded others, making ANYTHING he set his mind to.

In the last two years after his diagnosis, he and Mum travelled widely - Birdsville to attend the Big Red Bash, Uluru, Great Ocean Road, Perth, Broome, Margaret River - and many many more. There was no holding them back.

At home, he spent MANY an hour in the shed, often working alongside my brother to build a competitive racing buggy. When he was diagnosed, it was one of his greatest worries that he wouldn't finish it. Not only did he finish it, he got his ride on the track, and the buggy now carries his birthday as its racing number. He was so proud.

Now, Dad is no longer with us. And there is a huge hole in our hearts and our lives.

Cancer is terrible. Rare cancers are horrendous, with much fewer treatment options than more 'common' cancers. That's why we're asking anyone who may like to make a donation in lieu of flowers to consider making a donation to Rare Cancers Australia.

We reckon Dad would have liked that.
