200km for Box: Box’s Cancer Tour
I’m Will Hayes — or Thrills, as my mates know me. I’m 23, an electrical apprentice, and someone who only discovered running at the start of 2024. What began as a new challenge has turned into something much bigger: a way to make a difference.
Last May, I ran 100km to raise funds and awareness for testicular cancer in honour of my cousin Brad. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but also the most rewarding. That experience taught me that when you run for something bigger than yourself, every step matters.
Now, I’m setting an even bigger goal: 200km.
Why I’m Running for Box
In August 2024, my Uncle Anthony Hayes — known to all of us as Box — was diagnosed with stage 4 oesophageal cancer. The prognosis is terminal. It’s impossible not to think about time when you’re given a diagnosis like that. But to me, Box isn’t defined by a timeline.
He’s family. He’s laughter. He’s strength.
I believe everyone should live every moment with no stones unturned. I want to help remind Box of that — even on the hard days. He’s inspired me more than he knows, and now I want to inspire him back.
As Box always says:
“The past is the past, but if you live in the moment, each day will be a bonus.”
The Challenge Ahead
On October 11, 2025, I’ll run 200km — the first 100km around Lake Burley Griffin, and the second 100km around the AIS track. Every step will be for Box, for others fighting cancer, and for the families who stand beside them.
