My name is Will Hayes—also known as Thrills. I’m a 23-year-old electrical apprentice and a passionate runner. I only laced up for the first time in early 2024, but I’ve quickly discovered the power of running for something bigger than yourself.
In May, I ran 100km in honour of my cousin Brad to raise funds and awareness for testicular cancer. It was one of the hardest—but most meaningful—things I’ve ever done.
Now, I’m setting my sights even higher. In 2025, I’m aiming to run 200km to raise awareness and funds for oesophageal cancer in honour of my uncle, Anthony Hayes—though to us, he’s simply Box.
Box was diagnosed with stage 4 oesophageal cancer in August 2024, and the prognosis is, unfortunately, terminal. It is hard not to focus on the time we have left, but to me, Box is so much more than a timeline. He’s family. He’s laughter. He’s strength. I believe everyone should live every moment of their lives with no stones unturned, and I want to help remind Box of that, even on the tough days.
By running 200km, I hope to inspire Box to set his own timeline and live as long and as fully as he can. Every step of this run is for him—and for anyone who has been touched by cancer. If it can help shine a light on oesophageal cancer, give hope to others, and raise funds for vital research, then it will all be worth it.
As Box says, “The past is the past, but if you live in the moment, each day will be a bonus.”
This run will take place on October 4, 2025, with the first 100km around Lake Burley Griffin and the second 100km around the AIS track.
